I really like this idea—having the option for extensions would definitely give more flexibility to users who understand the trade-offs. While strong privacy defaults are important, a controlled opt-in system could satisfy both cautious and advanced users. Hopefully the developers consider a balanced approach that keeps privacy intact while allowing customization for those who need it.
