Blizzard recently introduced Overwatch: Classic to Overwatch 2, offering players the opportunity to revisit the game’s original iteration from eight years ago. While Overwatch has undergone numerous updates, changes, and reworks, Overwatch: Classic gives players a unique chance to experience the original chaos, which includes elements no longer available in Overwatch 2. Here are five key features that made the original Overwatch special but are absent in the sequel.

One-Character Teams
One of the most bizarre and fun features of Overwatch at launch was the ability to stack teams with multiple copies of the same hero. This meant you could have an entire team of Winstons, for example, or fill your side with Torbjörn turrets, making the game a hilarious and chaotic experience. In Overwatch 2, the game’s role lock system restricts teams to two damage, two support, and one tank, which eliminates the mayhem of double (or triple) Winston, or five-player Ana squads. While the restrictions may help balance gameplay, they certainly remove some of the wild, unpredictable fun of the original version.

Symmetra’s Carwash Turrets
One of the most infamous exploits in Overwatch was Symmetra’s “Carwash” strategy. By planting six turrets in a narrow doorway or corridor, players could create a near-impossible obstacle for the opposing team, with anyone who entered the area being eliminated instantly. Symmetra’s turrets have since been reworked and no longer pack the same punch they did in the early days. The original Carwash turrets, coupled with her teleporter, which allowed players to return to a point almost immediately after respawn, made Symmetra a truly fearsome pick. Now, her abilities are much more refined and balanced.

Mercy’s 5-Player Resurrection
Mercy’s ultimate ability, Resurrect, has undergone some of the most significant changes since launch. Back in the early days, Mercy could bring an entire team back to life at once, as long as they were all in close proximity. While this ability was immensely powerful, it often led to frustrating situations where a team would be wiped, only for Mercy to swoop in and undo all the work. The change to a single-player resurrection in Overwatch 2 makes Mercy a more tactical support hero but loses the thrilling, game-changing moments where she could revive multiple teammates at once.

Hanzo’s One-Hit Scatter Arrow
Hanzo’s Scatter Arrow ability was infamous for being incredibly overpowered. Intended to scatter arrows off walls, players quickly discovered that by aiming at the ground near an enemy, the arrows would all hit the same target, resulting in one-shot kills. This made Hanzo a fearsome force, especially for less experienced players who often found themselves on the receiving end of an unlucky Scatter Arrow. Blizzard eventually reworked Hanzo’s abilities to balance his gameplay, but Scatter Arrow remains one of the most memorable (and dreaded) abilities in Overwatch history.

Mei’s Frozen Death Streak
Mei was once one of the most terrifying characters in the game, with her ability to freeze enemies in place and then follow up with a quick, deadly shot from her icicle gun. Early Overwatch players remember the horror of being frozen by Mei, only to be killed in an instant. This version of Mei made her a dominant pick, often leading to frustrating encounters where players had little opportunity to escape. Over time, Mei’s freeze abilities were toned down, shifting her role to more of a support hero who slows opponents rather than completely immobilizing them.
