X has launched a new experiment allowing artificial intelligence chatbots to draft Community Notes — a key feature in its effort to tackle misinformation through community-driven fact-checking. This move brings AI into the moderation ecosystem, while keeping humans in control of what ultimately gets published.

Through X’s API, developers can now integrate their own AI tools to assist in generating draft notes. Bots like Grok, X’s proprietary chatbot, will also be involved. However, these notes must pass the platform’s established review process before they are made public. Only if contributors from a range of political and social perspectives agree on a note’s usefulness will it appear on posts.

X has made it clear that AI bots are not allowed to rate or approve notes — that responsibility belongs solely to verified human users. The AI-generated notes are meant to serve as a supportive layer, identifying content that may benefit from added context or fact-checking. This setup helps streamline the process while maintaining integrity and neutrality.

The initiative fits within a broader shift in social media moderation. Meta has recently adopted more community-based systems for flagging misinformation, and other platforms like TikTok and YouTube have been inspired by the Community Notes model to develop similar tools.

Currently, the AI-generated notes are being tested in small numbers. X intends to observe the impact and gather user feedback before expanding the rollout. The company’s goal is to strike a balance between scale, speed, and trustworthiness as the system evolves.

What Are Community Notes?
Community Notes are annotations added to posts that may be misleading, lacking context, or even AI-generated themselves. They are written and reviewed by contributors from various backgrounds. A note only becomes public once it receives consensus from users with differing viewpoints, ensuring it reflects a neutral and accurate perspective.
