Proxy not working with BBC iPlayer

The title speaks for itself.
I turned on global proxy yet the BBC sites all see my IP as being outside the UK.
I thought the whole idea of a proxy was to mask the real IP?

The proxies at present are all based in the US, that's why the BBC is saying you're outside the UK.
