Epic only connects with proxy off

Used Epic for years on my Mac with few issues. Sometime earlier this year (2017) I started getting the message:

Unable to connect to the proxy server
ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED

If I turn off the proxy, all web connections immediately work. But I no longer have the benefit of the Epic proxy.

I have tried using the Reset Epic button and quitting and restarting multiple times with no difference to this behaviour. This seems to be an issue with a growing number of users.

The same is happening to me, sometimes cant use the proxy, it seems to be intermittent.
